Three GLONASS Satellites Launched
"Proton launches three navigation satellites
Posted: Wed, Dec 25 8:54 AM ET (1354 GMT)
A Russian Proton booster successfully launched three navigation
satellites early Wednesday. The Proton-K booster lifted off from
the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 2:38 am EST (0738 GMT)
and placed into orbit three Glonass navigation spacecraft. The
spacecraft are among the last of the current generation of
Glonass spacecraft to be launched as Russia works to replenish
its constellation of navigation spacecraft: the final two
Glonass spacecraft will be launched in the second quarter of
2003 along with one next-generation Glonass-M spacecraft."

GLONASS Constellation to be Restored?
Three GLONASS Spacecraft Launched 25 Dec 02
"GLONASS could be restored
Release date: 13 Nov 2002
It has been reported that Russian Defence Ministry may restore
its global navigation satellite system.
ITAR-TASS, Moscow, reported on Wednesday 6 November, that
Russia plans to restore by early 2004 the orbital group of the
national global navigational satellite system, GLONASS.
'The restoration of the group of satellites, which is to
consist of 24 satellites, was started with the launch of three
spacecraft in 2002. There are plans to launch two or three
booster rockets every year with each putting two or three
navigational satellites into space. The satellites will first of
all be used to ensure national security. At the same time, the
Defence Ministry will be assisting the Russian Aerospace Agency
in commercial uses of satellites. The next launch of satellites
of the national global navigational system is planned to be made
with the use of a Proton-K heavy booster from the Baykonur
cosmodrome on 25 December.'"

Rhode Island's Statewide GPS/911 System
Rhode Island residents, with the only statewide e911 system
in the US, can obtain emergency help by dialing 911 from a
Sprint, Verizon or T-Mobile cellphone. The system still has some
problems that are being worked on, but it is predicted that
Cingular, AT&T and Nextel phones will also provide the

Boeing Evaluating Use of GPS Satellites to Augment Air Traffic
System
In July 2002, Boeing received a contract from the FAA to
study the use of satellites in air traffic management and
develop a system that includes a global satellite-based
architecture, secure two-way broadband communications, and a
secure integrated information network. Until a satellite system
is set up with all of those components, Boeing plans to use the
GPS satellite system to augment the current air traffic
management system.
